Agent of Russia Detained in Rivne for Passing Data on the Armed Forces of Ukraine

The counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine has detained an agent of the Russian military intelligence, known as the GRU, in Rivne. He turned out to be a former factory worker from Donetsk who arrived in the western region of Ukraine with the aim of adjusting the airstrikes of Russian troops.

This is reported by Rivne24

According to the case, the perpetrator came to the attention of the Russian special services when, after being released, he began searching for “easy earnings” through Telegram channels. Soon, he received an assignment from his curator in the Russian Federation to go to Rivne region to gather coordinates of potential targets.

The main targets of the agent were enterprises of Ukraine’s defense industry, as well as locations where personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were concentrated.

Upon arriving in Rivne, the agent settled in a local hotel. After receiving instructions from his Russian curator, he used taxis to carry out reconnaissance outings.

During his trips, the perpetrator photographed objects that he believed could be involved in defense tasks or used for troop deployment.

In particular, he attempted to identify the locations of mobile fire groups, radar stations, and anti-aircraft missile systems of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which ensure the air security of the western region of Ukraine.

Employees of the Security Service documented the agent’s criminal actions and detained him “in the act” while he was photographing the facade of one of the enterprises. During the arrest, a smartphone was seized from him containing coordinates of Ukrainian objects on Google Maps that he planned to pass on to the Russian special services.

Investigators of the Security Service informed the detainee of suspicion under part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (treason committed under martial law).

Currently, the perpetrator is in custody without the possibility of bail. He faces a penalty of life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
