Life Imprisonment for Rape and Murder of a Woman in Rivne

The convicted individual had a prior criminal record, including a conviction for attempted rape of a minor, and was released from prison only a few months before committing the new crime.

On July 25, 2023, in Rivne, late in the evening, a drunk man encountered a 29-year-old woman on Vyacheslav Chornovil Street who was returning from work.

He attacked the victim, initially choking her until she lost consciousness. After that, he robbed her, raped her, and when he realized what he had done, he strangled her. The victim’s body, showing signs of violent death, was discovered the next morning.

Law enforcement quickly identified the attacker, and the man was arrested, after which he remained in custody.

In January of this year, the court imposed the harshest punishment on the man – life imprisonment for robbery, rape, and intentional murder committed for selfish motives, with the aim of concealing other crimes, as well as being combined with violent satisfaction of sexual desire (Part 4 of Article 187, Part 5 of Article 152, Paragraph 6, Subparagraph 9, Subparagraph 10, Part 2 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The convicted individual claimed that he killed the victim unintentionally, so the defense appealed the verdict in an attempt to mitigate the punishment.

However, the appellate court upheld the prosecutors’ arguments and left the first-instance court’s decision unchanged.
