In Rivne Region, the Head of a Territorial Defense Unit Arrested for Arms Trafficking

The Security Service of Ukraine and the National Police successfully dismantled a channel for the illegal sale of weapons and ammunition in border regions.

During operational activities in Rivne Region, a 59-year-old head of a territorial community volunteer formation was arrested while attempting to sell an arsenal of combat weapons.

The perpetrator obtained weapons through acquaintances in the frontline southern regions of Ukraine and stored them in a specially equipped hideout in a garage on his property.

Operatives from the SBU and National Police caught him “in the act” and seized an AK-74 assault rifle, along with approximately 300 rounds of ammunition for it.

During a search of the suspect’s premises, more than 3000 rounds of various calibers, over 10 hand grenades, grenade bodies, fuses, and a rifled weapon – a TT pistol with loaded magazines – were also discovered.

The suspect has already been notified of suspicion under parts 2 of Article 28 and 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which pertain to illegal handling of weapons and military supplies committed by a group of individuals in conspiracy.

He is currently in custody, and the sanctions of the article provide for a penalty of up to 7 years of imprisonment.

The investigation is ongoing to establish all the circumstances of the case and to hold all involved parties accountable.
