A man is trying to help a woman who has been left without family support.
In Zdolbuniv, 87-year-old Volodymyr Mandziuk has become a guardian for his neighbor, who is alone after the death of her son and the grandson’s move abroad. The man explained that his own health does not allow him to fully take on this role, but he cannot leave the woman without care.

“I saw that she was going to the market hungry. When I came, I looked at what was happening in the house, and since then I have been taking care of her. She lives alone. So for several months now, I have been feeding her, but I can no longer do it myself,” said Volodymyr Mandziuk.
According to the man, he constantly prepares food for her, cleans her home, and does her laundry. However, as Volodymyr notes, he also needs help. He reached out to the social guarantees department of the Zdolbuniv City Council, but did not receive any results. The department explained that they cannot do anything without the pensioner’s consent.
“Social workers visited her, but she refused to sign the application. If she signs the document, social services will be provided by the care workers from the social center. If the court recognizes her as incapacitated after the relevant application is submitted, a guardian can be appointed for her,” noted the head of the social guarantees department, Viktoriya Kovtiuk.
Recently, representatives from the social service center visited the pensioner and advised her to consult her family doctor for necessary examinations. If serious illnesses are found that prevent her from living independently, her incapacity will be considered in court. Only under such conditions can the neighbor become her guardian, or the woman may agree to move to a nursing home.
