Lutsk Resident Sentenced to Three Years for Arson of Ex-Wife’s Apartment

The Rivne City Court has issued a verdict against Lutsk resident Denys Hurevych, who committed arson in the apartment of his ex-wife. The accused broke into the premises and set fire to clothes in the bedroom closet, which led to a fire. The court sentenced him to three years and three months of imprisonment.

According to the verdict dated February 9, at the time of the incident, the couple no longer lived together. The woman resided in the apartment in Rivne separately from her husband, and according to her, they had a conflict that led to the actual cessation of their cohabitation.

The fire occurred on November 18, 2023, at approximately 7:00 PM. Hurevych, using keys he had previously taken without permission, entered the premises without the owner’s consent. He set fire to clothes in the closet and then left the apartment, locking the entrance door behind him.

As a result of the fire, furniture, clothing, and other household items were destroyed, and the walls, ceiling, and floor were damaged. Experts assessed the damages at 119,000 hryvnias, which the man fully reimbursed.

In court, the accused did not admit his guilt, claiming that the fire could have occurred due to smoking in the apartment. Meanwhile, the victim stated that the man did not have permission to be in her premises and that she had not given him the keys.

Judge Serhiy Naumov found Denys Hurevych guilty under Part 1 of Article 162 (illegal entry into a dwelling) and Part 2 of Article 15, Part 2 of Article 194 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (attempted intentional destruction of property by arson). Considering the totality of the crimes and the previous verdict, the man was sentenced to three years and three months of imprisonment. The decision can still be appealed.
