Rabies Case Detected in Squirrel in Polissia: Quarantine in the Village of Ostky

A local resident in the village of Ostky, Rokytne community, discovered a squirrel exhibiting atypical behavior, and during the encounter, it scratched her hand.

Shortly thereafter, the animal, referred to as a squirrel in the region, was found dead. Tests confirmed the presence of the rabies virus in the deceased animal.

In response, a meeting of the anti-epizootic commission was held, chaired by the acting head of the Sarny District State Administration, Liubov Matsyhon.

The commission decided to declare the territory of the village of Ostky an unfavorable point for rabies and to implement quarantine restrictions within the following boundaries:

  • to the west – up to Nova Street (2 km from the outbreak);
  • to the north – up to the railway line (1 km);
  • to the east – up to the village of Lisove (2 km);
  • to the south – the forest area (2 km).

The Rokytne Village Council urges residents to avoid contact with wild animals, vaccinate their pets, and in case of bites or scratches, to promptly seek medical attention.
