Resident of Rivne Region Shot Acquaintance and Received a Suspended Sentence

The Berezne District Court of Rivne Region has made a ruling in a case of hooliganism. During a conflict, a man shot an acquaintance with a modified starter pistol but avoided real punishment, receiving a one-year probationary sentence.

This is reported by Rivne24

As stated in the verdict dated September 25, the incident occurred on September 3, 2024, on Independence Street in the village of Mykhailyn, Rivne District. At approximately 11:30 PM, near the “Zustrich” café, a dispute arose between Oleg Savchuk and another man. During the conflict, the accused produced a modified starter pistol Stalker Mod. 914-UK and shot the victim in the leg.

Oleg Savchuk explained in court that he had come to the village center to relax and brought with him a pistol he had found earlier for self-defense. He claimed he thought the pistol was non-lethal and was unaware of its modification to a firearm. The man expressed remorse for his actions.

The victim did not appear at the court hearing, stating that he wished for the case to be considered without him. He also reported that all damages he incurred had been compensated, so he did not insist on the imprisonment of the accused.

Judge Yuliya Starovetska found Oleg Savchuk guilty under part 4 of Article 296 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (hooliganism with the use of firearms), but exempted him from the main punishment, assigning a one-year probationary sentence. This decision can be appealed in the appellate court.
