Young Man from Rivne Region Receives Donor Heart After Serious Illness

Maxim, a young man from the Rivne region, was born with a complex congenital heart defect known as Tetralogy of Fallot, which includes four anatomical anomalies. At the age of one year and two months, he underwent his first surgery that restored his heart rhythm, allowing him to attend school and grow up alongside his peers.

However, a few years later, the illness re-emerged. It is likely that Maxim suffered a severe infectious disease, which triggered the deterioration of his heart condition.

The last few years have been extremely difficult for the young man. He experienced breathing difficulties, walking problems, and swelling. His heart enlarged to such an extent that doctors concluded that the only way to save him might be a transplant.

In early May, a donor heart was found for Maxim.

In Vinnytsia, after a stroke, one of the patients was diagnosed with brain death. His family made a decision that gave several people a chance at life – they agreed to posthumous organ donation.

The operation was performed at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery named after M.M. Amosov, and the donor heart from Vinnytsia was transported to the capital by helicopter.

At the moment, Maxim has already been transferred from intensive care to a regular ward. His indicators have stabilized, and he is gradually recovering, noting that he feels better.
