The last case of listeriosis in the Rivne region was recorded in 2014 in the city of Rivne.

The first symptoms appeared in the man on March 13. They resembled a common cold: runny nose, headache, and a temperature of up to 37.4°C. When he visited his family doctor, he was initially diagnosed with ARVI and sinusitis, and appropriate treatment was prescribed. However, despite the therapy, the man’s condition gradually worsened.

On March 27, the patient was hospitalized at the regional clinical hospital with a preliminary diagnosis of: brain infarction with thrombosis of the cerebral artery. After examinations, including an MRI, doctors found signs of meningoencephalitis.

On April 2, laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. The result was verified by the reference laboratory for tuberculosis diagnostics, bacterial, parasitic, and especially dangerous pathogens of the Center for Public Health, using bacteriological methods and the MALDI-TOF method.

Listeriosis is an infectious disease that is most often transmitted through food.

The main sources of the bacteria include:

  • raw milk and meat
  • fish, sausages, soft cheeses
  • unwashed vegetables and fruits

Listeria can multiply even in the refrigerator.
